Landscape with Barn: A Complementary Underpainting

This painting is entitled "Barn Clip." The barn resides on Willow Road in York Township, Michigan, just east of US 23. I was riding my bike on an early, humid summer morning when I came across this scene.

In my studio I took my deep rich Unison green pastel and did an underpainting of the barn (the complementary color of red), and did the same (reverse) with the grass and bush to the left. the resulting barn turned out rather vibrant (an added touch is the green ivy along the left edge), and you can spot some green on the barn as well as red in the grasses.

Take advantage of juxtoposing complementary colors in your landscape, or using them in your next underpainting.
