    Pastel Painting: Breezy Point Jetty

I should probably call this "Breezy Point Jetty Number 3," as it is the third painting I have done of this iconic landmark on the Atlantic at Breezy Point, NY. There are many unique angles from which an artist can "make a splash" with this scene! Pastel Painting: Bay Boats at Breezy Point

What better time is there to celebrate memories of summer when the temperature is below zero in Michigan? Here is the final rendition of "Bay Boats at Breezy Point." Inspired by the bayside (while avoiding those nasty biting black flies on the ocean side) at Breezy Point, NY. Had a great time with family and the Palaski's! #BreezyPoint #seascape #Beach

Pastel Technique: Adding a "Misty" look to the Landscape

Creating distance in a landscape is often achieved by muting the color as you near the horizon. You can also create a misty look to convey the impact of rain or (in the case of the painting below), snow. Here is the current version of "Wind Chill," inspired by a scene on Lake Huron in the upper peninsula of Michigan, near DeTour Village. We will focus on the right portion of the treeline, where you see the hazy impact of a falling snow. To create the misty look of light sno

Pastel Painting Technique: Capturing the Sandy Beach

Time to start reminiscing about summer as the cold, dark days of winter emerge. My current project in "Bay Boats," inspired by the scene below of the bayside at Breezy Point, New York. Although the colorful boats captured my initial attention, the "designs" in the sand (from tire tracks and the dragging of the boats) as they point toward the lighthouse on the horizon were also quite interesting. Here's the reference photo I will be working from: In observing sand dunes, a var

Painting Technique - Adding Character(s) to the Landscape

In November, I published this blog on adding characters to the landscape. Recently, while working on "Wind Chill," I decided that I needed to add a character to the frigid scene. I added this snipe, common water fowl in Northern Michigan, to the rocky shore: Without this character in the landscape, the viewer might interpret the rocks as huge boulders rather than the small boulders and rocks that they were in reality. So, adding a character to the landscape (dog, person, b

    Oil Painting: Point Pelee Storm

In early September, upon arriving at Point Pelee National Park in Leamington, Ontario, a dark sky and brisk winds off Lake Erie greeted me upon arrival. Lake Erie portrayed an "eerie" green hue, broken up by fierce white caps. Representing my recent foray into oil painting, Point Pelee Storm captures the brisk wind and rough seas in this lovely park in southern Ontario. #PointPeleeNationalPark #seascape #Beach

Pastel Painting: On the Bay at Breezy Point

Although today's weather will be sunny an 90, it has been a bit cloudy (and rainy) at Breezy Point. This scene is on the bay side, capturing some of the stormy clouds amidst the lighthouse and shell-laden dunes. Soft pastel on Uart sanded paper, 9x12. #seascape #Beach #BreezyPoint

Life's a Beach! Plein Air at its best!

In August I will be at Breezy Point, New York, painting new "beach-scapes!" Here is a painting I did back in 2008 of the jetty and lighthouse at Breezy Point: Breezy Point is located at the Western tip of Long Island (technically it is part of Queens). I will be there from 8/12-8/18. Painting sessions will be held in the early morning (7-11 am) to beat the heat, and we will be capturing the beach community both on the bay side and the ocean sides of Breezy Point. Contact m
