Pastel Painting: Matthaei Field


I recently completed this 8x10 painting which I started with an acrylic-based orange tone to the Uart sanded paper. You can still see some of the toned paper color in the trees and fields. I felt that this "orange glow" helped convey the warmth of the late afternoon vista at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan.


I'm also pleased with the composition of this simple landscape. Note the balance among the major masses: the smaller shrubs in the field (bottom right and center left), and how the smaller treeline in the left half of the painting balances the large trees to the right.
