Pastel Painting: Hoh Rainforest

The Hoh Rainforest is a temperate rainforest located in Olympic National Park. This painting is part of my PNW (Pacific Northwest) pastel series. This 9x12 pastel painting was inspired by a hike in the rainforest in early March.

"Hoh Rainforest" had a rather unique upbringing. I used Uart 320 grade sanded paper, which is rougher than the typical 400 grade used in most of my pastels. I created a heavy acrylic under-painting of complementary colors, then ventured to keep the colors rather limited in scope.

The purple tone of the painting along with the rough edges of dried acrylic paint provided wonderful artistic entertainment while working on this piece!
